Chicas, Swipe Right

The rise of social media and technology has made way for relationship-building apps that look to reimagine the way people make connections. People traditionally solidify friendships and romantic relationships in coffee shops and bars across the nation, but now people are opting for convenient transactional connections. The birth of the “swipe right” culture has fundamentally shifted the way humans interact with each other. The social landscape of relationship-based apps is more than a slight departure from face-to-face interactions—cultivating connections comes with a new set of rules, motivations, preferences, and hesitations. The purpose of this paper was to explore how Latinx women develop platonic, romantic and business relationships on online platforms—and in partnership with Bumble, I put my research findings to the test.
